This is a series of soft background etchings and crayons (“many overprinted with a tinted woodblock to imitate wash drawings” (Mackenzie 186)), mostly of landscapes, imitating the Old Masters of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque periods. In this collection, we find Arthur Pond’s and Charles Knapton’s imitations of such artists as both Agostino and Annibale Carrachi, Raphael [Raffael], Giovanni Guercino, Rembrandt, F. Parmigiano, Il Garofalo [Benvenuto Tisi], G. Bolognese [Giambologna], Campagniola [Campagnola], and Giovanni da Udina. That this collection is incomplete is not unusual--it is rare that the book comes complete, because few complete sets they issued have remained together. According to evidence in Pond’s journals, accounts, and correspondence, it would seem that the prints were mostly sold in singles and distributed to other English print dealers. Each plate indicates beneath the original artist, the signature of the engraver (whether Pond or Knapton), and the collection to whom the painting belonged (for instance, the vast majority of the paintings they imitated belonged to the famous contemporary portrait-painter Jonathan Richardson). , Mackenzie 186; National Biography XI:237 & XVI:76.
